Linares 2001: Curious finish, Kasparov at +5, everyone else at -1!
FINAL -- In the final round, Garry Kasparov put a big exclamation point on his dominating
performance in Linares. He beat Alexander Grischuk for the second time to reach a remarkable
score of five wins and five draws, three points clear of the field.
This, combined with Alexei Shirov’s last-round win over Judit Polgar, created one of the most
curious crosstables we’ve ever seen! To add the finishing touch, Peter Leko failed to break
through against Anatoly Karpov, leaving them at -1 with everyone else.
This created a massive tie for second to sixth place and Kasparov as the only person without
a minus score, a bizarre situation. By at least one tie-break system, Judit Polgar has taken
second place.
Grischuk deserves a special note for a fine debut at the super-tourney level. The 17-year-old
picked up wins against Shirov and Karpov, no mean feat at all.

as much fun as you did!
