Wow !

Who said the odyssey would never end?
Any odyssey ends one day. Our tournament odyssey will be finished after 15 rounds.
Very surprisingly gandalf was able to make a draw against shredder.
Also Yace was able to make a draw against gambit-tiger.
In a game that was discussed earlier in this forum, where hiarcs(dos) and century4(dos) both not having endgame tablebases fought out an drawish looking endgame,
century was able to win with a nice looking move
(74...Bxh2 ?!).
Can we say that hiarcs was bluffed by century4 ?

Pharaon was able to make a draw against shredder4.
And also a draw came from chessmaster versus virtual chess.
The sensation - to me - came when crafty killed junior.
Nimzo fought patzer. And chess system tal made a draw against the normal tiger.
The game fritz7 versus gromit was discussed earlier. First i played the game with the cd-version of fritz, what seemed to be a mistake.
The cd-version of fritz7 is buggy. This was outed when fritz7 first game after installation was the following on my machine:

I stopped the game here. I was completely shocked.
why is fritz allowing black to completely invade whites king position (move 22.Qh3) . After 23...Rxe7 fritz7 is reduced to death.
How can fritz7 evaluate the position after 23...Rxe7 with (when you know my critics over the years you will laugh about this running gag) 0.04 in favour of white,
playing Nd5 after 6'36" computation?
is it mad ??
In the same position gromit says +0.74 for black, even deep fritz says +0.69 for black after a few minutes on the same machine.

Programs with more knowledge, e.g. Chess System Tal 2.03 would evaluate the black moves with big advantage:
18...Nh4 with +2.19, 20...Bxh3 with +2.87, 22...Qh3 with +2.80, and would have better played 23...f5 with +5.54 instead of Rxe7 from gromit.
The position after 24.Nd5 would Chess System Tal evaluate with >+4.36 in forward of black !
A position a dump searcher like fritz7 calls +0.04 for white after 6 minutes thinking, is given >+4.36 for black by cstal !!
this is the difference between searching and knowledge, between old paradigm and new paradigm.

We had quite a few discussions about the question: how much is a position worth.
I think one can see this materialistic and positional / strategical.
IMO there is no reason to give a position +0,8 when you like it. If you like a position you can give +5, why not ? depends what you wanna make out of it. Do you only
want to win another pawn, then maybe 0,8 is sufficient, or do you want to win the game. Then +5 seems to be the more serious evaluation. I think we cannot
"solve" this discussion NOW. Fact is the new/old paradigm controversion/discussion is exactly about THIS TOPIC and situations like this show me that we have to
work much more on this field.

Back to fritz7:
this is the fritz7 they sell to many people in the shops ??? it played like early versions of chess system tal, but without the tuning of a few years !! :-)) how can they
try to make a stupid program play this way ??
this way fritz7 plays ā€˛chess" has nothing to do with chess itself. Ist machine chess, made for the ssdf-list.
But it is NOT producing better chess at all. It tries to emulate chess. But it is a weak emulation. It fails to emulate chess. It produces machine-chess-alike stupid
moves. The only reason the other side is not winning is that often the other side is such a dump machine chess emulation too. But chess is different. What i saw
here is anti-chess.

they must be crazy. why did nobody warn me that this fritz7 is a complete loser?? i checked my pc's, are they working accurate. yes they are.

So i patched it with the fritz7a version. And replayed the game with a more working fritz7a. I want to thank the gromit team for their fairness concerning this obvious
case massive-programming-bug-destroys-chess-program.

As we have now seen in CCC, fritz7a has also O-O-O castle-bug (it believes it cannot castle when a piece attacks b-square J)) but of course castle is allowed. So
again fritz has a chess-rule problem. I am sure this will be fixed on day. I hope they will not make fritz beeing unable to capture EP again...).

Socrates was again able to win against a strong program. It seems the faster machines help the program much to play a good game.
